Tips for a Successful year
Book Bag - your child should bring a book bag every day. Please make sure that the book bag is large enough to fit their Daily and Homework folders. You may want to keep a change of clothes in your childs back pack. Second graders typically do not have restroom accidents, however other accidents like spilled milk, mud, or paint can happen. The clinic often has clothes, but they will not always have your childs size.
Dress- A student's clothing should be comfortable, suitable to the weather, and allow for maximum learning. Clothing which is not socially appropriate (dirty, skimpy, etc.) will make it more difficult for the student to adjust to school and enjoy the society of the classroom. Shoes with cleats damage the floors and are not allowed at school. For safety reasons open toed shoes are not appropriate at school. A tennis shoe or sturdy shoe with a closed toe is appropriate. Hats, headbands, bandanas, and visors may not be worn in the building. Non-permanent hair dye is not permitted at school.
Parents are asked to use good judgment in dressing students for school. Students in grades K-5 are allowed to wear shorts. However, students need to be particularly aware of presenting themselves in dress to others in a way that is in keeping with their development. The wearing of tank tops, tube tops, halters, or other clothing, which could be suggestive, is not appropriate for school. Bare midriffs and very short skirts or shorts are not permitted.
School Board policy states that “the wearing of or absence of any item of clothing which will distract from the learning process of other students or with offensive words or design or the advertisement of alcohol or drugs will not he tolerated."
If a student comes to school in clothing which creates a disruption in the learning environment, he/she will be asked to call his/her parents to bring something more acceptable.
Snack - We have time for snack every day. It is helpful if you do not place your child's snack in their lunchbox. Please do not send in candy as a snack. Also, please do not send in any juice boxes or soda. We can only drink water in the room.
Lunch Money - The cost of a lunch is $2.25 per day. Milk is $0.40 per day. The easiest way to pay for lunch is through Mealpay. (More information can be found on our school's website.)You can set up your account so they send you reminder emails when your child's account balance is low. If you choose to send in a payment, please place all lunch money in an envelope with your child's name. Milk may also be purchased separate from the school lunches.
Lunch - You are welcome to come in to eat lunch with your child any day during the week. The school does not allow fast food to be brought into the cafeteria. You are welcome to purchase a school lunch for you and any siblings that come with you. If you are planning on attending lunch, please send in a note and let me know if you plan to purchase lunch from the school. When you arrive at school, you can meet us at the cafeteria door.
Ice Cream - Ice cream will be available for students to purchase during lunch. The cost of ice cream is $1.00
Transportation Changes - In order to ensure your child's safety, we will need a hand written and signed note from you when your child's regular form of transportation will be different. Please include your child's first and last name, their regular form of transportation, and their transportation change in your note (including the address of the bus stop where they will be getting off). The office does not accept e-mail as a written note.
Illness - Please keep your child home when he or she is sick. They will recover quicker and not infect other children in the class. When your child returns from an absence, please send in a written excuse note. IF YOU DO NOT SEND IN A NOTE, THE ABSENCE WILL BE MARKED AS UNEXCUSED. Please report any case of head lice immediately.
Conferences - There are two scheduled conferences (October and February) to discuss your child's progress. Anytime you have a question or concern, please e-mail me at [email protected], write a note, or call the school and leave a message. I will send a written response or call you back as soon as possible. I will schedule a conference if necessary.
Early/Late Check Out - Arrival for school runs between 8:20 and 8:50, and for your child's benefit, please have him or her to school on time if their health permits. If your child is late, please stop by the office to sign them in. If you need to pick up your child early, please remember to check him or her out at the front office. Your child must be in school until 12:10 to be marked present for the entire day. If you check your child out before 12:10 they will be marked absent for the day. Early check out ends at 3:00
Book Orders - I usually send home book order forms once a month. Please do not feel obligated to purchase any books. If you decide to order, a check can be written for the entire order. Please do not send in cash. Scholastic only accepts checks.
Birthdays - You may provide a simple snack for your child's birthday. If you would like to bring in a snack, let me know a day or two in advance so we can make arrangements if needed. Birthday invitations are to be sent from home and are not distributed in school unless the whole class is invited. This is done to prevent any hurt feelings. Please do not bring in cakes or cookie cakes unless they are precut. This will help make our lunch time run more smoothly.
Medication - No child is allowed to take medication in the classroom (with the exception of inhalers for asthmatic children). All medication should be brought in and registered at our clinic by the parents. The children should never bring in medication of any type.
I look forward to a great year! If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know as soon as possible either by note, e-mail, or phone. Thank you in advance for your help and support. Together we we'll make this a great year for your first grader!
